Dog Ringworm

How Contagious Is Dog Ringworm?

ringworm image
Ringworm exposure can be either by direct contact between infected and non-infected dogs, cats, or people; or by the infected environment. The dog ringworm fungal spores may live in bedding or carpet for several months.

All 4 ringworm fungal species can be contagious to dogs, cats, and people.

Ringworm in dogs remains contagious for about three weeks if aggressive treatment is used. Contagion will last longer if only minimal measures are taken
You should minimize exposure to the dog with ringworm from other dogs or cats and your family members.

A ‘carrier’ status can exist in dogs, cats, or people because the ringworm treatment was not long enough, or aggressive enough; or because there is some underlying disease compromising the immune system.

What are the side effects of ringworm pet meds?

dog with ringworm
Common conventional Vet practice for dog ringworm is to prescribe Griseofulvin daily for a minimum of 30 days, or the antifungal antibiotic Fluconazole 1x weekly for 3 to 4 weeks.

Griseofulvin side effects include: upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea or loose stools, thirst, fatigue, dizziness, thrush/yeast infection in the mouth, and confusion. An allergic reaction to Griseofulvin may occur with side effects of difficulty breathing, swelling tongue, a closing of the throat, and swelling face. Griseofulvin causes liver damage. Griseofulvin makes the skin sensitive to sunlight. Griseofulvin cannot be used in conjunction with Phenobarbital, anticoagulants, or vitamins. Adding 50 IU of vitamin E per day was reported to increase blood levels, so blood levels must be monitored. Griseofulvin is not well absorbed unless it is given with a fatty meal. The usual instructions are to give the tablets with a small amount of high-fat food, such as a rich canned dog food, fat from meat trimmings, or some cream. Some dogs cannot tolerate even a small fatty meal. So be sure to let your veterinarian know if fat consumption has caused a problem for your dog.

Side effects of Fluconazole are: upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, kidney damage, and liver damage.

Common conventional Vet practice for dog ringworm is to also prescribe an antibiotic topical antifungal medication, and to apply it for 10 days, plus use an antifungal shampoo 3 times.

The active ingredients in antifungal shampoo and topical antifungal drugs include:

Miconazole (micatin, monistat), with the side effects of: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, or tongue). If Micatin Cream is swallowed, contact a doctor or poison control center immediately.

Clotrimazole (mycelex, lotrimin), with the side effects of: blistering, burning, hives, irritated skin, itching, peeling, reddened skin, stinging, swelling due to fluid retention.

Econazole (spectazole), with the side effects of: severe blistering, itching, redness, peeling, dryness, swelling, or irritation of the skin. Avoid getting Econazole in eyes, nose, or mouth.

Other side effects are blistering, oozing, swelling, and Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth, face, or tongue).

Ketoconazole (nizoral), with side effects of: loss of appetite, possibly severe in some dogs; a lightening or greying of the haircoat color, vomiting, diarrhea, elevated liver enzymes, gastrointestinal difficulties, liver damage and toxicity, and a reduced fertility of males.

And Terbinafine (mentax, butenafine, lamisil), with the side effects of: itching, rash, swelling, or redness, tinging, burning, or redness where medicine is put on, and for shampoo with this, either dry or oily hair. Must avoid contact with the eyes, inside nose or mouth.

2 More Ways Dog Ringworm Is Treated

Common conventional Vet practice may also include shaving the remaining hair from the dog, and using a Lime Sulfur Dip.

Lime Sulfur Dip: is irritation to mucus membranes, meaning the pets should not groom themselves while they’re wet. The sulfur ingredient smells like rotten eggs. The Lime Sulfur Dip is strong enough to stain jewelry and clothing, plus it will turn a white colored fur yellow.

Veterinarians state that the above treatments will not produce immediate results; and the areas of hair loss will get larger before they begin to get smaller. Within 1-2 weeks, the hair loss should stop, there should be no new areas of hair loss, and the crusty appearance of the skin should subside and the skin look more normal. If these results do not occur within two weeks, they will either put your dog on another drug, or start the same procedure again.

Ring-Ex for Ringworm Customer Testimonial

“Within weeks of getting a new puppy in our house, all three dogs had scaly, itchy patches on their skin where their fur was beginning to fall out. Our vet diagnosed this as ringworm but I was not keen on the harsh, synthetic antifungal medications he suggested, especially as my dogs have been licking and biting at their skin so much recently I did not want them to ingest these chemicals. I opted for your natural product Ring-Ex rather, and that has sorted out the problem. I’m very relieved because we also have two young children and I did not want them to contract this infection as well. Thank you for your wonderful range of natural products.” Joyce P.
