How Contagious Is Dog Ringworm?
Ringworm exposure can be either by direct contact between infected and non-infected dogs, cats, or people; or by the infected environment. The dog ringworm fungal spores may live in bedding or carpet for several months.
All 4 ringworm fungal species can be contagious to dogs, cats, and people.
Ringworm in dogs remains contagious for about three weeks if aggressive treatment is used. Contagion will last longer if only minimal measures are taken
You should minimize exposure to the dog with ringworm from other dogs or cats and your family members.
A ‘carrier’ status can exist in dogs, cats, or people because the ringworm treatment was not long enough, or aggressive enough; or because there is some underlying disease compromising the immune system.

What are the side effects of ringworm pet meds?
Common conventional Vet practice for dog ringworm is to prescribe Griseofulvin daily for a minimum of 30 days, or the antifungal antibiotic Fluconazole 1x weekly for 3 to 4 weeks.
Griseofulvin side effects include: upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea or loose stools, thirst, fatigue, dizziness, thrush/yeast infection in the mouth, and confusion. An allergic reaction to Griseofulvin may occur with side effects of difficulty breathing, swelling tongue, a closing of the throat, and swelling face. Griseofulvin causes liver damage. Griseofulvin makes the skin sensitive to sunlight. Griseofulvin cannot be used in conjunction with Phenobarbital, anticoagulants, or vitamins. Adding 50 IU of vitamin E per day was reported to increase blood levels, so blood levels must be monitored. Griseofulvin is not well absorbed unless it is given with a fatty meal. The usual instructions are to give the tablets with a small amount of high-fat food, such as a rich canned dog food, fat from meat trimmings, or some cream. Some dogs cannot tolerate even a small fatty meal. So be sure to let your veterinarian know if fat consumption has caused a problem for your dog.
Side effects of Fluconazole are: upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, kidney damage, and liver damage.

2 More Ways Dog Ringworm Is Treated
Lime Sulfur Dip: is irritation to mucus membranes, meaning the pets should not groom themselves while they’re wet. The sulfur ingredient smells like rotten eggs. The Lime Sulfur Dip is strong enough to stain jewelry and clothing, plus it will turn a white colored fur yellow.
Veterinarians state that the above treatments will not produce immediate results; and the areas of hair loss will get larger before they begin to get smaller. Within 1-2 weeks, the hair loss should stop, there should be no new areas of hair loss, and the crusty appearance of the skin should subside and the skin look more normal. If these results do not occur within two weeks, they will either put your dog on another drug, or start the same procedure again.
