Trudy is a sweet mid-sized dog who is a definite “LeMutte” original creation! The vet called her a golden retriever mix, but she looks more like a hound/shepherd mix overall; she came in as a starving stray, all her ribs and her hipbones are prominent (but we’ll fatten her up in no time). She seems very grateful for the soft place to sleep and the regular meals.

We are estimating Trudy’s birth date as 2/8/09, making her about 2 1/2 years old – though her teeth are very white, so she may be a little younger. Trudy has an odd little “hitch” in her gait – when she gets moving fairly quickly, her rear legs sort of swing to the right side, and when she runs, she sort of “hops” with her hind legs while running normally with her . . . → Read More: New adoptable dog: TRUDY

DuQuella is named for one of our adopters/facebook friends; we chose this name because it rhymes with our other juvenile black dog, Ella – too cute! (We’ll occasionally be stealing facebook friends’ names for our pets; ideas are hard to find, ha).

DuQuella looks like a LeMutte dog, we can only guess that she may have some black Labrador and some sort of shepherd in her mix; she’s much smaller than a full Lab, approximate weight right now is 35-40 pounds, and we are guessing she was born around 12/1/10, so she’s just over 6 months old right now. She has some brown fur on the backs of her legs and her feet.

Two new cats, female Cybele and male Eros, were listed.

Cats Wasabe and Alameda were adopted, as were dogs Sissy, Freckles, Kaa, Nagaina, and Bagheera. They can now be seen on our Adopted page.

Nothing happened in the week of 11/14. Oh, well.

Two new dogs were listed: Sissy and Freckles, both ~50-pound females. Sissy is an adorable ~1-year-old border collie mix, and Freckles is a cute ~2-year-old Walker Hound.

In addition, six new leMutte puppies were listed: three males and three females. The males are Baloo, ShereKhan, and Mowgli. The females are Kaa, Nagaina, and Bagheera. They were all born on September 24.

An October ringworm outbreak at the shelter has left eighteen of our twenty-one adoptable pets infected. Infected pets include:

Alameda Adriano (adopted after infection) Acosta Aguafria SilverBelle ChiangMai Siobhan Wasabe Lambert Fantasia Doolittle Melinda Six unnamed leMutte puppies

This leaves only Cupid (who is on “longtimers discount”), Surat (currently on “adoption pending”), and Zorro uninfected.

All of these pets (except, of course, Adriano, since he’s already with his new owner) entered treatment on Monday, November 1.

It is important to understand that ringworm is nothing to be afraid of. It is, in fact, even less serious of an infection than athlete’s foot or those mushrooms in your lawn. Stay tuned for a blog about ringworm and why it’s nothing to fear.

Today Russian justice finally closes the file Alexanian. It should not be seen as a gesture of humanity. At the expiration of the limitation period, neither the judge nor the prosecutor can not prevent the closing of the record. Only the defendant himself has the right, if he wants to get a dismissal and compensation.
This is not the choice made by Alexanian. He can not afford to waste time and energy to fight against the pseudo-Russian justice. The most important thing for him now is to recover all of his civic rights, including the possibility to leave Russian territory. For over a year since he is requesting permission to travel abroad for treatment.
Relatives and supporters of today Alexanian grow a sigh of relief. But a great feeling of bitterness remains. Those who know
Vasily know that if his health would permit, he would fight to the end to prove his innocence. And then somehow, those who remained in prison and tortured for two years received at least a draw. He failed to force him to testify against his former employers of Yukos, but their strategy has worked in part. Bitterness

The indictment was therefore invalid at the time. It was surreptitiously fixed some months later.

- The judges who decided his detention relied in particular on an electronic document that had supposedly been found in the computer’s legal department at Yukos, which described the various means by which employees of Yukos could circumvent the law. This document was therefore Alexanian a dangerous character, may hinder the smooth running of the investigation if left at liberty. Now we learned a few weeks ago that the document was not developed within the company, Yukos, but … by Ribyne, CEO of East Petroleum, one of the fiercest opponents of Khodorkovsky and part-civil trial.
This element of the case has been little reported by the media, but use by the public prosecutor of such gross forgery is scandalous to say the least!

So if we sum up: Alexanian was arrested on the basis of an indictment invalid, he was kept in custody two years because of a crude forgery. During these two years he has been subjected to blackmail and abuse, his health has deteriorated to put his life at risk … Therefore difficult to truly rejoice today, even if the persecution of Alexanian by Russian authorities is nearing completion.

They will also tormented to the end: to make their decision, judges are required to attend in person qu’Alexanian in court, even though the doctors forbid him from appearing in public because of his severe immune deficiency. Ringworm infections are not dangerous or threatening but can be very irritating if not dealt with swiftly.  If you are able to identify the infection in the early stages, you can start applying a topical cure for ringworm and it will more than likely dissipate within 1-2 weeks.  Although some infections can last longer, you can minimize the severity of the infection if you are able to identify the issue as soon as possible.

You might have heard of that saying, “Caring is sharing” except in the case of when it’s your pet who shares the fungal infection, Ringworm with you. Once you have ringworm you may be asking lot of questions. What is ringworm? Is it caused by worms? How did my pet get it and how do I get rid of it? Dr. Billi Tiner, the resident veterinarian provides some relief from that itchy, flaky fungal infection known as ringworm.

QUESTION: “Is Ringworm caused by worms?”

Dr. Tiner: “NO.” Ringworm is caused by a fungal infection. There are not that many diseases that can be spread from one species of animals to another or from animals to people (zoonotic). However, ringworm is one of the diseases that CAN be spread. Cats and dogs can give ringworm to each other and both of them can give it to people.

In humans, it causes a lesion on the skin that is usually circular and very itchy (pruritic). In dogs, it causes patchy hairloss (alopecia) that can occur anywhere on the body. The skin in the area of the alopecia is usually flaky. Dogs are usually not pruritic.

Cats are the tricky ones. Some cats will have patchy hairloss. Usually the hairloss is localized around the mouth, eyes, and on the ears. However, there are cats that are asymptomatic, which basically means that they have the fungus on their fur, but don’t have any lesions. These cats are still contagious! So, if you suddenly come down with a ringworm lesion and you recently had contact with a cat. The cat was probably the source, even if it appeared healthy.

The fungus that causes ringworm can also survive very well in the environment including the dirt. The fungal spores can also travel through the air and hide in places like air conditioning ducts for very long periods. It is very difficult to get rid of ringworm once it has entered an environment. The fungus is very susceptible to household cleaners. So, it is pretty easy to get kill it on cleanable surfaces. The problem is the places that it can hide that we don’t usually clean.

If your pet is diagnosed with ringworm, it is very important to limit the areas that it goes and to keep it isolated from other pets and also from children. Ringworm is a treatable disease, but as I said, it is very hard to get rid of once it gets into an environment.

Contrary to its name, ringworm does not belong to any family of worms. It is actually a fungus called Dermatophytes. The fungi live in the surface of the skin and feed on dead skin tissue and hair.

CHICAGO (CBS) – Do you let your pet sleep with you? It could be hazardous to your health.

Sound crazy?  A new study says a surprising number of people allow their pets to curl up with them, and it could actually be risky. But are the new findings overblown? What dangers could you face from close contact with your pets?

In a nightly ritual, Chrissy Carew and her five dogs all bunk up together for the night.

“I consider them full-fledged members of our family,” she says.

A new survey shows 56 percent of dog owners in the U.S. let their dogs sleep next to them. But researchers say that could lead to some real problems. 

“Sometimes we forget that they aren’t our children. They are pets and also they have their own life and there are diseases that can be transmitted,” says veterinarian Bruno Chomel of the University of California’s School of Veterinary Medicine.

Chomel is one of the lead authors of the study just published by the Centers for Disease Control. Researchers tracked people who had close contact with their dogs and cats, either sleeping next to their pet or allowing their animal to lick and kiss them.

In rare instances, some caught illnesses like the plague, rabies, antibiotic-resistant infections; meningitis; and cat-scratch fever. Others picked up ringworm and intestinal parasites.

Medical experts say that one of the most important things a pet owner can do is to keep your dog or cat free of fleas. The insects bite and could spread disease.

“You always think it’s never going to happen to me, but when it happens to you it can be very sad and very bad,” Chomel says.

Eric Marlowe Garrison caught a terrible case of ringworm on his foot. The culprit: his roommate’s cat. He says he will change the way he interacts with pets.

“It has certainly taught me a lesson,” Garrison says.

But infectious disease expert Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine says his cat sleeps with him.   

“Anytime human beings have close associations with animals, including their pets, there’s some risk, but it’s very, very small,” he says.

Indoor cats pose less risk because they don’t come in contact with fleas.

Chrissy Carew makes sure she keeps her dogs very clean and plans to continue to let them in her bed, despite the survey findings. 

People most at risk for catching something from a pet are the elderly, the very young and people with weakened immune systems. If your pet appears sick, limit close physical contact until they are better. Always wash your hands after petting an animal.

Remember that researchers have also found that pets have tremendously positive benefits on people’s health, like reducing stress and anxiety.
